The four day Appointed Person or ‘AP‘ Course is about ensuring you have the right knowledge and skills that will enable you to pass the CPCS test at the end of the course, which will allow you to qualify for a CPCS Trained Operative card.

Health and safety legislation requires that lift plans must be written by a competent and qualified Appointed Person (AP) and by attending our CPCS Appointed Person course you will gain the accreditation you need that is required to work on site as a CPCS carded AP.

This Appointed Person course is suitable for anyone needing to prove their existing competence and experience as an Appointed Person. The course is also suitable for those who want to become a CPCS carded AP and have a limited experience of the role. As such this is the type of course that will appeal to those wanting to train up as an Appointed Person for this safety-critical role.

As a nominated AP, it will be your responsibility to construct and write a lift plan and risk assessment that will allow crane lifts to be completed in a safe and efficient manner. The CPCS Crane Appointed Person course covers all you will need to know in order to write an effective and health & safety compliant lift plan and the course covers such topics as;

  • A detailed description of the duties and responsibilities of an Appointed Person & their relationship with key staff such as the crane supervisor, crane operative, the slinger signaller and other staff including the crane assembly & maintenance teams.
  • A comprehensive review of the current legislation, codes of practice and LOLER 98 and BS7121 regulations.
  • The ability to calculate lifting equipment point loadings and outrigger loadings including the use of weight distribution spreader mats.
  • Identify various types of lifting accessories and describe everyday applications.
  • Explain different types of slinging methods for differing loads such as unbalanced, balanced & tubular loads.
  • The ability to identify different types of methods of communications in a lifting scenario.
  • Crane Appointed Person courses are run at our training venues nationwide and the AP course can also be run at your own location if you have a sufficient amount of candidates to make this financially viable and a suitable classroom. The cost of the four days Appointed Person course starts at £895 + vat and the price includes all course materials and CPCS card application fees.

If you work for a company that is CITB levy registered company the company will be able to draw down a grants that would financially support the delivery of the AP course by a minimum of £400 and a maximum of £488. On successfully passing the AP course we will handle the CPCS card application process for you and make sure your CPCS Trained Operator Card is delivered to you as quickly as possible.

To be eligible to attend this course you must have passed the CSCS Health Safety & Environmental touch screen test at the Managers level within two years of attending the AP course. It is also vital that you have a good understanding of both verbal & written English.

It should be noted that the Appointed Person CPCS trained Operator card is valid for a period of two years, during which time you will need to complete a Level 5 NVQ in Controlling Lifting Operations – Appointed Person. On completion of this qualification, you will then be able to apply for a Blue CPCS Competent Operator card which is renewable every five years.
